Alumni Drama Students Share Their Experiences of Theatre On Wednesday 21st September 2016, ex Paston students, Joanne McGarva and Ryan Howes came into Paston College as guest speakers for the current students. Jo, who had left college 2 years ago, toured with the Saltmine theatre company for 2 years, as part of an internship. This year she auditioned and received a place on the Musical Theatre course at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. The other ex-student, Ryan Howes, left Paston in 2010 and went on to graduate from Rose Bruford Drama School in 2013. Whilst working as a professional actor he has now started to train as a nurse at the UEA alongside. They both recalled that the auditions were very intense, they similarly performed a monologue and a song using various techniques and were split into small groups to be analysed on their team work and communication skills. Both Ryan and Jo inspired the group of current students by giving them advice such as, encouraging the students to take a year out to mature and get themselves ready, and then just to go for it! They advised the current students to take risks when making important decisions and said that it would lead to fantastic experiences which allow you to find out who you truly are. Overall it was an excellent talk which was enjoyed all round.
