Matilda Bailes, a former Aylsham High School student has just landed her first major role as Eponine in the Norfolk Youth Music Theatre amateur production of Les Misérables. Matilda is a second year Paston Sixth Form College student studying Drama & Theatre Studies, English Literature and Performance and was delighted to hear the news.
“This is one of my dream roles and the first lead I have had out of school or college. There was over 40 people who auditioned for the role of Epoine, so it feels like a massive achievement and I am very grateful to Norfolk Youth Music Theatre for giving me the opportunity,” exclaimed Matilda.
Matilda’s character Eponine, is cynical but resourceful as a street-smart teenager and first-born daughter of Monsieur and Madame Thernadier. Applying her drama and singing skills, Matilda will be performing the solo “On my Own”, which expresses the unrequited love her character holds for the character Marius. She expresses her dream of being by his side and her devastation in knowing his love is for another woman.
Having previously performed in various musical and drama productions at The Sheringham Little Theatre and Theatre Royal Norwich, with the Norfolk Youth Music Theatre, Matilda is excited to be progressing her drama career, taking centre stage in a leading role. “I am very nervous, as this will be the first time on my own to sing in front of such a large audience, however I have three rehearsals a week for the next two months, so I know I will be fully prepared and ready to perform with confidence,” Matilda explained.
Matilda’s aspiration is to become an actress on the National Theatre Stage, but first she would like to go to Drama School to further her knowledge of acting. She has applied to study at Guildford School of Acting, LAMDA and Rose Bruford, and has been invited to interviews for all of them. Matilda has already had one re-call for an audition and is patiently waiting to hear back in a couple days’ time, to find out whether she has a recall for her first choice.
Les Misérables will be in production from Tuesday 11th to Saturday 15th April 2017 at the Playhouse, Norwich.
