English Language

WJEC

It’s one of those things you just have to have! If, for whatever reason, you haven’t managed to acquire a GCSE in English, the team at Paston is on hand to help you. We take great pride in our teaching of GCSE English and have wide experience in developing the sort of skills you need to get that magic C grade. And, because the course we offer is English Language, this means no more Shakespeare or poetry! The structure of the course is really flexible and allows for more than one attempt at one of the exams during the year.

The course is divided into four units. Two are assessed in class: for one, you study a fiction text and do some creative writing; for the other, you look at spoken language, considering different types of conversations and learning how to improve your own speaking and listening skills. The other two units prepare you for the exams where you will do some personal writing and look at an interesting range of non-fiction texts: letters, newspapers, and adverts.

During the course we will help you develop your writing skills, going back over key aspects of grammar and punctuation, improving essay structure and expression, and learning how to get those all important marks in the exams.

Assessment

Two 1 hour examinations containing reading and writing tasks (40%).
Four pieces of written coursework completed under controlled conditions (40%).
Speaking and listening (20%).

Entry requirements

Most people will have achieved a D grade in GCSE English, but we will always look at cases individually and are open to persuasion by those exhibiting genuine motivation.
