If you have a deep interest and fascination for Mathematics, and maybe are considering studying Mathematics at university, Further Mathematics is a subject for you. By taking this with AS/A-level Mathematics, you will study ‘Double Maths’.
In Further Mathematics you will work with more complex numbers and problems which will satisfy and challenge you, investigating more abstract ideas, like the square root of -1, and gain a more complete understanding of the structure and practical applications of algebra. Did you know that a 3D game moves you through virtual space by using matrices and vectors? These are the sort of things you will meet in Further Mathematics.
In AS Further Mathematics you will study the following Pure Mathematics topics:
• Complex numbers.
• Matrices and how to use them.
• Proving formulas using exact arguments.
• Complicated series of numbers.
With additional units from AS Mechanics and Decision Maths.
Three 11⁄2 hour examinations.
A minimum of BBCCC at GCSE including English/English Language, and an A*/A in GCSE Mathematics. You must also be studying AS or A2 Mathematics.
In A2 Further Mathematics you will build on and develop what you learned at AS with Pure Mathematics topics.
• Polar curves.
• Calculus.
• Complex numbers.
• Matrices – moving into 3 dimensions.
• Hyperbolic functions.
• Vectors in 3D.
• ‘Groups’.
Combined with additional units from A2 Mechanics and Decision Maths.
Three 1 1⁄2 hour written examinations.
