Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Media Production

(Television and Film)

Equivalent to 3 A-levels

 

Gaining a place on the BTEC in Media would give you the opportunity to work with a department graded as “outstanding” by Ofsted.

Entry Requirements

Four or more GCSEs at grade A*-C, with at least one from Maths, English Language and Science or a merit/distinction in a BTEC First in a related area, plus grade C or above in GCSE English Language.

 

What will I study on the course?

  • • How films and television programmes are made.
  • • How the film and television industries in the UK work, and what career opportunities there are for you.
  • • Filming techniques for a variety of different media products, from television drama through to music videos.
  • • Film and video editing techniques using industry standard digital editing software.
  • • A wide range of animation techniques, from traditional 2D methods through the CGI 3D modelling of environments and characters.
  • • How to create soundtracks for a range of different media products.
  • • How to design and create interactive DVD menus to showcase your work.

 

 

What sort of things will I do on the course?

  • • Make different media products: advertisements, music videos, animated short films, promotional videos and documentaries.
  • • Work on projects sometimes by yourself and sometimes as part of a larger production team in which you take on a particular role (e.g. editor or cinematographer).
  • • Learn how to present your work to an audience, either at a festival on the big screen or in an interview on an interactive, muti-media DVD that you have created.
  • • Learn how media texts are put together to create different meanings for different audiences.

 

 

How will I be assessed on this course?

There are no written examinations on this course. Your tutors will assess you through a range of written and practical projects as well as oral presentations.

 

What can I go on to do after I’ve completed this course?

You could study a wide range of Media and Production courses at university e.g. film and video production, video games design, animation, post-production and broadcast technology. Paston Sixth Form College has a Progression Accord with the Norwich University College of the Arts which gives Paston students the option to study locally for a degree after completing their BTEC.

Harry Gay gained a triple Distinction grade and is going to the University of Westminster to study Film and Television Production. Jake Bossom gained a Triple merit grade and is going to the university of Huddersfield to study Interactive Media. Philippa Wright gained a Merit, Merit, Pass grade and is going to the Norwich University College of the Arts to study Games Art and Design.
