Sir William Paston Scholars 2009-10

“Paston Scholarship” numbers double"

This year 24 young people have been successful in their applications to receive Sir William Paston Scholarships - twice the number who received them in 2008.

The scholarships, worth £500, are provided by the Trustees of the Paston Foundation, to high flying young people who achieve outstanding GCSE results. The Trustees, a body created by the will of Sir William Paston, include nominees of the Queen and the Bishop of Norwich.

"We are delighted with the interest shown in the scholarships and by the high calibre of the young people who applied” said Chair of Trustees of the Paston Foundation , Mr Ivor Kiddle.

The scheme was established to commemorate the foundation of Paston, one of Norfolk’s oldest educational establishments, in 1606, and to celebrate the achievements of thousands of alumni  who have found success in all walks of life over 400 years, including Horatio Nelson, Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury (1694 - 1715).

The scholarships are awarded through a competition and the successful students will have achieved top grades (A*/As) in their GCSEs. The successful scholars, all now students at Paston College, are drawn from nine schools (Acle, All Saints (Lessingham), Aylsham, Broadland (Hoveton), Cromer, Hellesden, North Walsham, Sheringham and Sprowston).

“The award of a scholarship is a mark of outstanding academic achievement and is a link to the best tradition of learning at Paston over 400 years.” said Ivor Kiddle,

“The Paston School motto, “De mieux en mieux partout” - from good to better for all. Is relevant today in a College with a strong academic reputation.”

The scholars were presented with their certificates and cheques by Mr Kiddle at a lunch held at the College today.

Peter Mayne, Principal, welcomed the students to the function and introduced them to three of the Trustees – Ivor Kiddle who had been a Paston student from the late 1930s, Brian Durrant, in the 1940s and Nigel Horner Glister, during the 1960s.

He told them
“You should feel special. You have all done very well in your GCSEs, and you should now aim high and work hard to realise your potential. We expect much of you as Sir William Paston Scholars.”
