Summary

Psychology is the study of the brain and behaviour, and the BTEC in Applied Psychology provides students with the opportunity to develop knowledge of various aspects of human behaviour that psychologists research to try and enhance the quality of life. This course is a Diploma and is offered alongside our A level provision.
In year 12 you will study:
Unit 1: Psychological Approaches and Implications. This includes learning about different approaches to Psychology (social; learning theory; biological; cognitive) and how they are applied in the real world.
Unit 2: Conducting Psychological Research. You will learn about the way psychologists conduct research and analyse findings. You will also conduct and write up your own psychological study.
Unit 3: Health Psychology. You will explore psychological approaches and theories related to lifestyle choices, unhealthy behaviours and behavioural change, linking them to their specific contexts.
Unit 4: Introduction to Psychopathology. You will develop knowledge of psychopathology, types and characteristics of mental disorders and approaches to treatment, and the role of professionals in supporting and promoting mental health.

Entry Requirements

The requirements for the course are inline with the standard entry requirements for the college.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to study a one year (Certificate) or two-year programme (Extended Certificate). Students progress will be awarded as pass, merit or distinction.

Objective

The programme is designed to develop the following skills and knowledge, and the course is designed to fulfil these objectives.
Demonstrate psychological knowledge, be able to recall key assumptions and concepts
Demonstrate understanding by explaining the link between psychological assumptions and concepts to behaviour in society
Apply and evaluate psychological assumptions and concepts to explain contemporary issues of relevance to society

Assessment

50% of the BTEC has two internally assessed pieces of work and 50% is external assessed through formal examinations.

Progression

The BTEC in Applied Psychology provides students with a broad basis for study in the applied Psychology sector. It is designed to support progression to higher education or vocational programmes. Higher Education opportunities in Psychology, Health and Social Care, Child Care and Nursing are just some of the options open to students who have followed a BTEC in Applied Psychology.

Career Progression

Students with qualifications in Psychology have a range of career options available to them. For example, following an undergraduate degree in Psychology, students can progress in routes in Forensic Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Psychology, Health Psychology and Teaching. The skills obtained through the study of Psychology also opens up opportunities in Health and Social Care, Nursing and the Police Service. Employability skills including cognitive and problem solving, interpersonal skills and intrapersonal skills are developed, in addition to building on the mathematical and literacy skills from GCSE study.
