Summary

Core Mathematics is a Level 3 qualification aimed at supporting students who do not study A-Level Mathematics but need essential problem solving and quantitative skills to support their other A-Levels, and for future study and employment.

Core Mathematics builds on GCSE Mathematics with a sharper focus on problem solving skills by considering and tackling mathematics in meaningful contexts. This includes financial applications of mathematics, as well as further statistical ideas that can support work in other subjects they will be studying such as psychology, sciences, geography, sociology and even history.

Students currently studying Core Mathematics have found it gives them confidence to better understand the mathematical requirements in for their other A-Level courses.

Over the two years of the course students will study the following:
• Statistics and algebra

  • Probability and estimation
  • Data analysis and modelling
  • Sequences and growth
  • Financial planning and management
  • Collaborative problem-solving approaches and techniques
  • Using technology and spreadsheets
