Summary

Functional Skills in English is a part time course for students over 19 who need to improve their skills and qualifications but are not yet ready to study at GCSE level. We offer it at three different levels, all of which build your skills up to GCSE level: Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

Daytime or evening classes are offered, and you will be expected to attend one, 3-hour lesson each week across 18 weeks to develop a range of reading, writing and communicating skills. The course has two starting points in the year (September and February) and students can progress onto the next level if they are successful in their studies.

Because this is a short course, attendance at all sessions is vital.

The qualification is recognised by colleges and employers and some universities accept Functional Skills Level 2 instead of GCSE, but you must check your progression plans to see if this is a suitable path for you.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will have to complete an assessment online before places are offered and it is usually on a first come first served basis, this will determine the Functional Skills level students are placed upon.

You will also be given a Digital Skills assessment and will be offered a short course to improve this area if deemed suitable.

Objective

To help adults fill gaps in their working knowledge of English and develop their skills and confidence, as well as giving valuable qualifications that can be used for employment and further study.

Assessment

Unlike GCSEs, assessments are spaced throughout your course, and you will have a chance to re-take them if needed. Exams can be online or paper-based.

Progression

Students may go on to higher levels in Functional Skills, GCSE or other higher level study.

Career Progression

The Functional Skills qualification is recognised by an increasing number of employers and could be useful in a wide variety of career choices. The course is about developing essential skills of effective written and verbal communication, all of which are highly sought after in the workplace.
