Summary
This part time course will give students confidence and a positive attitude towards mathematics. It will also enable students to recognise the importance of maths in their own lives and society. It could also provide a vital stepping stone to Higher Education. You will cover a range of topics for instance general arithmetic, algebra, shape and space and data handling. GCSE Mathematics is offered as a 3 hour lesson once a week for one academic year.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should be working at level 1/2 after an initial assessment has been completed. Those who are not currently working at this level with be encouraged to take a Functional Skills maths course part time first.
Assessment
You will sit three exams which are externally assessed at the end of the course in May/June.
Progression
Students may go on to one of the Access to HE courses at CCN or many university courses which require GCSE maths at Grade 4/5. Many vocational courses also have this requirement.
Career Progression
Maths is a central part of your progression to other courses and employment. It isn’t just about knowing how to carry out certain calculations. It is about the essential skills of recognising problems, pursuing solutions, and communicating explanations, all of which are highly sought after in the workplace.
