What You Will Study

Chemistry investigates how and why substances react together and how these can be used to enhance our lives – for example the development of medicines and food production. It is a core science, where you will develop descriptive, analytical and strong problem solving skills, providing you with an excellent grounding in the three main areas of the subject: physical chemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

During your first year you will study atomic structure, chemistry calculations, structure and bonding, chemical equilibria and reaction rates, oxidation and reduction, patterns and trends in the Periodic Table, and organic chemistry. In the second year you will develop your skills and understanding to look at how studying reaction rates can be linked to understanding how reactions take place, organic chemistry, the fundamental laws of energy change, how chemical reactions can be used to give electrical energy and the design of electrochemical cells. You will also explore the pH scale in more depth, develop an understanding of equilibria and why transition metals are good catalysts and have coloured compounds.

Each week you will be tasked with classroom-based work which you will back up with independent study to reinforce the knowledge and skills covered. Some topics involve more practical work than others and experiments are a key part of the course; there are important skills and competencies you will develop to make you a more proficient practical chemist.

Our chemistry laboratory was recently refurbished, creating an excellent environment with a wide range of specialist technical apparatus to help your study at A Level. Trips in recent years have included visiting the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition at the Royal Society in London, providing an excellent opportunity to engage with a current, cutting-edge research.

We recommend you take this subject alongside at least one of the following A Level subjects: biology, maths and physics.

Why Choose Paston College?

A wide range of subjects

We're proud to be the biggest provider of A Levels in Norfolk, offering 27 A Level courses

Student progression

100% of our students progress to university, employment, apprenticeships, of gap years

Excellent results

Our students do consistently well on their A Level courses, with pass rates consistently in the high 90s

Entry Requirements

You will need to achieve a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 6 or above, and three GCSEs at grade 4 or above. You will need to achieve a grade 6 or above in GCSE chemistry or additional science and grade 5 or above in GCSE maths.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed through a variety of practical and theoretical work. Your final grade is determined by your performance in three written exams which take place at the end of the two year course. All papers contain a mixture of short and longer answer questions as well as multiple choice questions.

Course Progression

Chemistry is an essential subject if you aim to study chemistry, medicine, veterinary science, dentistry or pharmacy at university and extremely useful for the biological sciences. It is also an excellent preparation for an extensive range of scientific and non-science careers.

Where Your Course Can Take You

As a successful chemistry student, you will be able to think, understand abstract ideas, make connections between different concepts and solve problems. You will also be able to communicate clearly, both in writing
and using maths. You will develop a very wide and in-depth skill set - this explains why it is a sought-after A Level for admission to courses such as medicine and is a widely valued qualification more generally.

Fees

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the Advice Shop. You will need to provide their own overalls, protective footwear and stationary. Please check our Finance pages for information on loans, bursaries, fee information and student travel offers that are available. Alternatively please contact the Advice Shop .
