What You Will Study
This course brings three fascinating periods of British, European, and North American history to life, allowing you to explore a part of the past you’re passionate about through the coursework module. If you’re interested in history, enjoy learning and writing about the past, are open to lively debate, and want to understand how the world we know today was created, then this course is for you.
As part of this course you will study three different topics. You will learn about the British transformation between 1918 and 1997, exploring the changes in British politics, society, economy and culture. Next you will focus on the USA, the Boom, Bust, and Recovery, where you will examine the emergence of the United States as a superpower following the 1920s boom and the Great Depression. You will also learn about the witch craze in Britain, Europe, and North America where you will analyse the prominent cases of witchcraft between the 16th and 18th centuries, including the Salem Witch Trials and the East Anglian witch craze.
Alongside these three compulsory topics, the coursework module allows you to explore a part of history that you are passionate about. Previous coursework topics have included World War One, the rise of Hitler, the French and Russian Revolutions and American Civil War.
The study of A Level History will give you an understanding of events and help to develop important skills such as communication, analysis, and evidencing a case. You will get the opportunity to learn from guest lecturers and visit sites that will bring the topics you are studying to life. Previous lecturers include Dr Malcolm Gaskill from the University of East Anglia (UEA), a specialist on the history of witchcraft. We also work with the Holocaust Education Trust every year and as part of your course you will be able to apply for the Lessons from Auschwitz course, which includes a trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland.
