What You Will Study

This course will help you to understand the world around you by increasing your self-awareness and enhancing your critical faculties. You will explore the impact of Christianity on culture and society, as well as its relationship to the big questions of philosophy like the existence of God and the nature of consciousness.

Our Philosophy and Religion A Level will encourage you to engage critically with contemporary moral and ethical issues as well as exploring the nature of religion and its relationship to the modern world. You will develop a broad knowledge of religion and enquire into the purposes and commitments of human life – especially those expressed in philosophy, ethics and religion. The course covers Christianity as its main religious component. You will examine and debate the fundamental teachings of Christianity such as the existence of the soul and the afterlife, or belief in miracles. We also look at contemporary Christian issues such as gender identity and Christianity, and Christianity in a multicultural society.

The course is stimulating and varied. You will have six hours of homework a week, which could include watching videos, conducting surveys, preparing presentations and independent research as well as reading and writing activities. The topics and materials covered are thought-provoking, leading to fascinating in-depth classroom discussions. Expanding your knowledge of philosophy, ethics and Christianity, as the major world faith studied, will have many connections to other A Level subjects at Paston, such as History, Psychology and Law.
