What You Will Study

If you have a passion for working with people, helping others to lead healthier lives and supporting them in the challenges they are dealing with, then our Health and Social Care course could be for you. The course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to pursue a variety of rewarding careers in the health and social care sector.

Whether you aspire to become a nurse, midwife, paramedic, social worker, mental health professional, special educational needs (SEN) specialist, occupational therapist, or psychologist, the course offers a solid foundation to help you achieve your goals. You will study a wide range of topics, such as lifespan development, careers in health and social care, sociology, psychology, anatomy and physiology, understanding specific care needs, and care planning.

Alongside this, you will have opportunities to participate in health promotion campaigns, charity events to raise awareness of relevant issues, attend sector specific visits and hear first-hand from guest speakers from industry – such as current health and social care professionals, charities and other organisations.

Our curriculum is tailored to meet the demands of both higher education institutions and employers, ensuring that you are ready to excel in your chosen career path. We work with a significant number of employers across Norfolk and Suffolk, including Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, many residential care settings, and SEN schools. These employers offer a range placement and work experience opportunities for students to able to complete relevant industry placements.

Entry Requirements

You will need to achieve five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE English language or maths. You will also need to provide two references and attend a taster day.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed through a combination of exams and assignment-based tasks which may include report writing, presentations and group tasks. You will also keep a log of your experience on placement and your personal development. This qualification will include both internal and external assessment methods.

Course Progression

The course will provide you with the core knowledge and skills that will allow you to progress in a variety of rewarding destinations. This could include the next level of college-based study, university, an Apprenticeship or employment.
You could continue your studies with us through City College Norwich Higher Education. We offer degrees and Higher Education options in a wide range of subjects including Health Studies, Mental Health Practice and Childhood and Youth Studies.

Where Your Course Can Take You

Former health and social care students have gone on to have successful careers in areas such as: healthcare assistant and nursing roles, paramedics, midwifery, social work, SEN teaching, occupational therapy, and counselling.

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over fees may be payable.
