"I never would have expected to get where I am today"

Tallulah Self shares how her Paston College journey has seen her reach her ambition of working as an editor for a television production company.

Independence and creativity

I chose to attend Paston College specifically as I was attracted to the Creative Media Production BTEC.

I enjoyed college and the independence that came with it. My course and my tutors were excellent.

Personal development and creativity

I really developed my creative and technical skills through the BTEC course. This helped me to understand the area of media I specifically wanted to work in, which was television and shooting/editing.

As well as my studies, I really liked the fact the media department let us borrow kit for our own projects outside of college. I was always taking out equipment to play around and shoot my own stuff in my own time!

London calling

I left college in 2017 and I got a job as a production trainee at a production company in London in August of the same year. I moved to London shortly after.

I stayed in this job for two years and became a junior filmmaker, shooting and editing films for clients. In July 2019, I got a job as a camera operator on a BBC Three series and then was offered a full-time job as an editor, working on factual content/documentaries for the BBC.

I am currently an Editor at The Connected Set (a TV production company) in London, working on content for BBC Three.

Next steps

I hope to continue to work my way up in my company, editing on bigger productions and learning new skills. This year, I will be co-directing my first commissioned documentary, filming in Norwich then heading to Los Angeles to film!

I never would have expected to get where I am today. I take each step as it comes and make the most of my opportunities!
